TOP TEN E-BIKE BUYING GUIDELINES

BUYING AN ELECTRIC BICYCLE: A GUIDE

If only picking which electric bike to buy was as simple as riding an ebike up a steep hill... Here are five pointers to assist you in making the best decision and getting started riding.

1.CONSIDER YOUR REQUIREMENTS

Electric bicycles are made for a variety of people and purposes. It is entirely up to you to determine which characteristics are most important. If you want to be as comfortable as possible, a step-through frame might be the ideal option. A middle motor system or a high torque hub motor may be the best option if hill climbing is critical. If you plan on riding long distances, a battery with 400 watt-hours or more is recommended. Understanding your own requirements can assist you in determining which characteristics are most important on your electric bike.

2. CHOOSE YOUR RETAILER WISELY

Purchasing an electric bike should be as much about entering a bike store as it is about purchasing the goods. You should evaluate your purchasing location based on three factors: mood, dedication, and quality. When you walk into a store, you get a sense of the energy. Is the personnel pleasant, competent, and accommodating? The shop's evident enthusiasm for electric bikes is referred to as commitment. Do they have a large number of e-bikes or just a handful in the rear of the store? Knowing that the shop is dedicated to the electric bicycle movement means that they will be eager to assist you in making the most of your electric bike for years to come. The sort of bicycles sold by the merchant is referred to as quality. Are these brand names that you can look up, or are they motorcycles about which you can't find much information? You want to be sure your store is in it for the long haul, not just to make a quick buck.

3.TEST RIDE A COUPLE OF BIKES

Test riding is perhaps the most important — and enjoyable — aspect of purchasing an electric bike. When you ride an electric bike, you may ignore specs, reviews, and research and focus just on the most fundamental question: 'Do I enjoy this bike?' If that's the case, ask yourself a few more questions: 'Does it climb hills the way I need it to?'; 'Does the bike fit me the way I want it to?'; and 'Does it have the quality and functionality I want?'

Before making a purchase, make certain you test-ride multiple bikes... These things have a significant qualitative component that can only be discerned by riding the bike.

4.HAVE HIGH EXPECTATIONS

The electric bicycle is a ground-breaking mode of mobility. Quality electric bikes have finally arrived, and they are dependable, powerful, practical, and enjoyable to ride. Overall, an electric bike has the potential to change one's life. Not all electric bikes, however, are made equal. Many electric bikes on the market fall well short of the goal of a modern, high-quality machine. It is your responsibility as a consumer to establish high standards and demand the best.

5. THE WARRANTY MATTERS

Buying an electric bike, whether it costs $1500 or $10000, is a significant financial commitment. With a warranty, you can rest easy knowing that your money was well spent. Most electric bike manufacturers with products selling for over $2000 should provide a two-year warranty on parts, motors, and batteries (with no restrictions for regular use).

6. TRUST YOUR INTUITION

It may appear that the internet is a jungle of contradictory information, and that is not far from the truth. There are a lot of options, a lot of opinions, and few reputable organizations that certify and review electric motorcycles in a methodical way. So, what's a person to do? The greatest method is to trust your gut instincts. If something appears to be too good to be true, it most likely is. It's usually better to avoid a bike from a brand you've never heard of and can't find any information about.

7. TAKE THE LONG VIEW

It's more than just operating on electricity to be environmentally sustainable: it's about the manner the bike was designed, the quality of its construction, and the after-sales service to maintain it in outstanding shape. With appropriate maintenance, your bike should last between five and 10 years at a minimum, and your battery should last between 600 and 800 full charge cycles. When it comes time to replace the battery, your retailer should be prepared to have it repaired or repurposed rather than thrown away.

8. QUALITY COUNTS BUT SERVICE COUNTS JUST AS MUCH

Electric bikes aren't toys; they're mode of mobility. The quality of the bicycle itself, regardless of the propulsion mechanism, is critical, and it's even more critical if you want to ride it every day. While the quality of bicycle components can usually be judged by looking at the parts list, motors and batteries can be more difficult. When in doubt, look into the motor and battery manufacturers. But keep in mind that the quality of the components won't matter if your electric bike isn't properly set up and tuned. Maintaining the high-quality components you've invested in is easier with the help of your local independent bike dealer.

9. BUY LOCAL

If at all possible, buy from a local supplier. Even the most painless purchase will result in queries regarding your bike, and in the worst-case scenario, problems, so no matter what occurs, you'll want to be within 50 miles of your purchasing location so that they can assist you. Furthermore, your support ensures that local electric bike professionals will be available to you when you need them in the future.

10. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR

The ancient adage applies to electric bikes just as much as it does to everything else in life. Building a nice electric bike that is reliable and has quality components is not inexpensive. Expect to pay at least $1500 for a throttle-operated bike or one with a cadence sensor. Expect to pay $2500 and up for an electric bike with a torque sensor. The good news is that a high-quality e-bike can soon pay for itself. That doesn't even take into account the happiness dividend!
